Browns to Hire Norv Turner?

Just days after naming Rob Chudzinski their new head coach, the Cleveland Browns are preparing to bring another former member of the San Diego Chargers staff on board. Norv Turner, one of seven coaches to be fired on Black Monday, is reportedly in line to become Cleveland’s new offensive coordinator.

There are two popular theories when it comes to Turner and his ability to work offensive magic.

Theory number one is basically that Turner is a genius, and the fact that his Chargers ranked 31st in passing yards, 27th in rushing yards and 20th in points this year was just the byproduct of bad personnel.

Theory number two, the one that has gained some steam as of late, is that the way Philip Rivers ultimately regressed under Turner says a lot more about his abilities than any past success possibly could. Rivers at one point was right on the edge of the NFL’s top five quarterback cutoff line; these days some are asking whether or not his best days are long behind him. If Turner couldn’t do anything with a guy who is as talented as Rivers is at the helm, what is he going to do with an unproven commodity (at best) in 45-year-old Brandon Weeden?

Nevertheless, despite some people’s doubts about him, Turner to the Browns appears to be a done deal. As reported by Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer:

New Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is set to name Norv Turner his offensive coordinator soon, a source said, and also hire a new defensive coordinator to replace the well-liked Dick Jauron.

Will Turner be the guy to turn Cleveland’s 19th ranked pass attack and 24th ranked rushing attack into something special? We’ll find out soon enough.
