Brent Grimes Signs Tender with Atlanta Falcons

Hey, the Falcons are finally showing up for free agency. Jay Glazer and Adam Schefter have reported Atlanta has been talking to the Eagles about their starting corner back Asante Samuel.

What this means for Atlanta, and Brent Grimes, after the jump.

The reports coming out the last week have suggested the Eagles will be getting a 6th round pick, at best, for the high priced corner.  Samuel has two years, $21 million left on his contract.  He is known as a gambler in coverage, but has still put up great stats in Philly.

Dimitroff was the college scouting director of the Patriots when Samuel was drafted in 2003, so we have a definite connection to the player.  But what does this mean for Brent Grimes?

With limited cap space, Atlanta would need about $10 million in cap space, which could happen with a few cuts and restructures, but the most likely way to come up with the money is to pull the franchise tag from Grimes.  This would make some sense if Grimes is looking to get a bigger/longer contract than Brandon Car and Cortland Finnegan (around 5 years, $50 million).

Samuel could then be a bit cheaper and only two years older than Grimes, and Atlanta would be finished with the deal in two years.  Or is Atlanta leaking this information to force Grimes to finally sign his franchise?  It certainly improves Atlanta's leverage in negotiations.

Or perhaps Atlanta will get another starter, and push one of the corners to nickel.  With Nolan wanting five starting defensive backs, this could be a possibility.  With Dunta Robinson recently restructuring, I do not see Atlanta cutting him.

What does everyone think about the potential move?  If Atlanta can get Samuel for a late 6th round pick, he would be an instant improvement over any corner we still have, and should improve our historically terrible 3rd down defense.  Should Atlanta try to keep Robinson, Grimes and Samuel?

Update: That was quick.  Brent Grimes signed his tender within two hours of the Samuel news leaked.  Bravo, Dimitroff
