Boston Celtics center Shaquille O’Neal will not play in the team’s first playoff game against the New York Knicks on Sunday, Danny Ainge announced in front of the media on Saturday.
After failing tests on his inflamed right Achilles on the morning before the Celtics’ practice, it was ruled that he would not be available for the team’s postseason opener against the Knicks. This, of course, comes on the heels of O’Neal missing 27 games in a row during the regular season from February 4 to April 1. Then, after returning against the Detroit Pistons, he re-injured his calf six minutes in, and proceeded to sit out the rest of the season.
Neither Ainge nor the team gave any timetable when their veteran center would be ready to play.
