Nathan Cleverly will defend his WBO light heavyweight title when he meets unheralded Vyacheslav Uzelkov at the Motorpoint Arena on October 27.
Cleverly, 25, has not fought since whitewashing Tommy Karpency in February and it was expected that the Welshman would announce a major opponent for what would be his fourth defence of the title acquired in 2010.
Overtures to Bernard Hopkins, Carl Froch and Beibut Shumenov have all fallen on deaf ears and other titlists- Chad Dawson and Tavoris Cloud have defences already lined up.
Frank Warren, Cleverly’s promoter, has attracted criticism for providing what has seemed, a domestic barn burner against Tony Bellew aside, a handful of sub-standard opponents for the Welshman over the last two years.
Sheffield’s Ryan Rhodes has brought a curtain down on his 17 year professional career.
Rhodes, 35, lost last time out to Sergey Rabchenko in a European light-middleweight title shot and that defeat came hot on the heels of a knockout by Mexican prodigy Saul Alvarez when the pair met for the WBC title in June 2011.
Rhodes twice challenged for world glory- his first attempt in 1997 ended in a points defeat to Otis Grant. However, he did secure both domestic and European titles- a highlight being his 2009 epic with Jamie Moore.
