Boxing News and Rumors Recap: Pacquiao, Mayweather, Cotto, Khan, Froch and More

Floyd Mayweather Jr has confirmed that he will not be facing eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao until at least the autumn after a deal was struck with Miguel Cotto for a May 5 showdown in Las Vegas.

Representatives from both Golden Boy and Top Rank Promotions had distanced their respective fighters from the Mayweather-Pacquiao blockbuster over recent days, however, the selection of Cotto as Mayweather’s next opponent will frustrate many, despite the Puerto Rican’s demolition of Antonio Margarito in November.

Amir Khan still awaits news as to whether he will be allowed a first crack at new WBA and IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson. American Peterson is keen to learn news of his appeal to the WBA over their order for a rematch between the pair and appears reluctant to make any plans before his legal options have been exhausted.

47 year old Bernard Hopkins will finally face Chad Dawson in a re-run of their controversial October 2011 fight after both parties finally put pen to paper on a contract this week. Hopkins will hope to erase memories of the shoulder injury that curtailed last autumn’s showdown when the rivals meet in April.

Closer to home, we appear no closer to discovering who Carl Froch will face next. The Nottingham super-middleweight had looked set to secure a two fight deal with undefeat IBF champion Lucian Bute, however US television network Showtime are said to prefer a domestic opponent share the ring with the Canadian. The returning pair of Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell have been touted as potential opponents by the broadcaster.
