European Cup League Final: Bayern Munich vs Inter Milan

The Champions League final is set for Saturday as Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will battle for the title of Champion.

Inter Milan has not made and appearance in the European Cup final since 1972, in which they lost to Ajax 2-0. Thirty-eight years later they get another shot to try again.

Bayern Munich captured the 2001 title for the first time since winning the championship in 1976. Bayern Munich bested Valencia 5-4 on penalty kicks.

For Bayern, Arjen Robben could play a critical role for the team if they are going to move on and win the the European League Cup. Robben has scored crucial goals en route to several victories during the run to the final.

On the other side of the field, Wesley Sneijder was let go by Real Madrid before landing at Inter where he has shined. His combined skill-set as both a passer, and the touch shots make him a real threat and a focus for the Bayern defense.

Louis van Gaal, coach of Bayern know that a lot is riding on this championship match, and he is interested to see what his team is made of.

”We have given the ultimate answer to those who said I was not doing a good job, but maybe I will have to leave Bayern anyway this summer whatever happens in Madrid. If we beat Inter and prove ourselves the best in Europe this season, I’ll probably have to resign as you can’t improve on that.”

Still, Van Gaal remains confident in the consistency that his team has shown of late, getting into a good rhythm on the field.

“Confidence and self-belief are very high and if we maintain this rhythm, we can beat anyone. Inter are an excellent side, well-organised, a solid unit and ruthless in converting chances. They didn’t knock out Chelsea and Barcelona by accident and yet I’d rather be facing Inter than Barca in this final. I still feel my old club has the best team in the world right now, so this is a moment for us to make history and we cannot let it pass.”

Jose Mourinho also knows the importance of this game.

“This game is the most important in the world. It is even bigger than the World Cup because the teams in it are at a higher level than national teams, who can’t buy the best players.”
