Augusta National Finally Admits 2 Women: Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore

History was made on Monday morning when for the first time in 80 years, women were permitted to become members of Augusta National Golf Club.

Sure, they had to be a former Secretary of State and a financial industry legend just to gain entry – but still. This is an accomplishment. Women should be happy.

Maybe now these broads can finally stop complaining, am I right?

"This is a joyous occasion," Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said Monday."These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership.

"It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. This is a significant and positive time in our club's history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family."

No, it really isn’t a joyous occasion at all. Snark and sarcasm aside, this is an embarrassing day for men and women everywhere. Yes, Rice and Moore should be commended for making history but, everyone else, male and female, should be ashamed that it didn't happen until now.

All of the folks who sat by idly and just let blatant discrimination happen deserve blame for this having taken as long as it did. All of the people who adopted the “Clubs should be allowed to do whatever they want” mentality were part of the problem, too.

Yes, clubs should be permitted to do whatever they want to legally. Government shouldn’t intervene. But people, citizens who care about this, should have gotten together and done the public campaigns that ultimately brought us to this point a long time ago.

Black people didn’t gain entry to Augusta until 1990. Women didn’t gain entry until 2012. When your club opened in 1932, neither of those things is much of an accomplishment.
