Atlanta Falcons Put Brent Grimes on IR; What Does this Mean for Defense?

According to NFL.com and countless others, Brent Grimes is going onto the Falcons Injury-Reserve list. He has suffered a serious Achilles injury. This is a huge loss for Atlanta. I cannot put into words how sorry I feel for Brent Grimes and the organization.

Grimes signed a one-year franchise tender earlier this year so this could very well be his last game that he has played in a Falcons uniform. Grimes has been a fan favorite and a key defender for the Falcons over the last few year so his departure will be felt by the team.

The move the Falcons made this off-season in trading for Asante Samuel now looms large as it still leaves the Falcons with two good corners but the depth behind them is thin at best. Darrin Walls, a back-up corner last year, was also cut this pre-season due to an injury. This leaves the Falcons with Christopher Owens, recently re-signed Dominique Franks and Robert McClain as the back-ups.

GritsBlitz.com expects Thomas Dimitroff to try and work a deal for a veteran back-up corner that can come in and play the nickel for us. It might not happen in time for this weeks game but keep an eye on our GM as he works the phone lines. One of our writers, Zach Kidd, suggested a few names on Twitter: Cary Williams, Greg Toler, Marcus Trufant, William Middleton (that one should sound familiar).
