“It was a big surprise for me,” Redman said via phone from Louisville on Thursday. “I didn’t really expect it. But the unexpected is part of the NFL. They made their decisions. So that’s the way it is. You have to live with it. We’ll just have to carry on and see what happens with my future. If it’s over, it’s been great.”
One day, Redman, 35, will be able to sit back on his deck and spin a wonderful tale about how he went from NFL starter to selling insurance and back to NFL starter starting on Monday Night Football.
Redman had a decent run for the Falcons and he always seemed to be a "team" guy. He clearly had taken a step back over the course of the off-season. It is a great story on how he came to play for the Falcons and he might well be the only person on earth that Bobby Petrino has positively influenced. Good luck Chris.
A lot of people talk about the pressure on Ryan and Smith. But I think the real pressure is on the offensive line. That unit was perhaps the most disappointing group last season. Ryan didn't throw the deep ball as much as the Falcons wanted, almost entirely because the offensive line couldn't protect him long enough. Other than bringing in offensive line coach Pat Hill and drafting Peter Konz, who might or might not start right away, the Falcons didn't have much turnover on the offensive line. The key is left tackle Sam Baker. He lost his starting job last season, but the Falcons say Baker was limited by injuries and is healthy now.
As we found out in the playoffs you live and die in the trenches. The Falcons simply have to be better this year on the line of scrimmage.
Small like his brother, James Rodgers has good burst and the ability to stretch a defense. The main issue that he has is determining how to find soft spots in zone defenses and trusting his hands. Once he sorts these issues out, he could end up as another Eric Weems clone.
James Rodgers is definitely a guy I would like to see on the practice squad. He has the ability to be a change of pace/slot receiver and also a good return guy.
