Chris Weidman conducted a Q&A prior to the weigh-ins Friday for UFC 150: Henderson Vs. Edgar II. Weidman, who is a perfect 9-0 in his MMA career, feels like his recent win over Mark Munoz makes him the No. 1 contender in the UFC's middleweight division.
However, since Anderson Silva retained his belt over Chael Sonnen, several members of Silva's camp have claimed that none of the rising prospects at 185 pounds makes for an interesting challenger to "The Spider." Weidman sounded off on that issue during the session.
"I don't want to be that guy to say he's ducking me," Weidman said (thanks to MMAjunkie.com for transcribing). "It seems like he is, but I don't want to be that guy. I have no problem with you guys saying it."
Weidman, a former standout wrestler, has earned three knockout and three submission victories during his professional career. He is 5-0 inside the Octagon, including the wins over Munoz and Demian Maia - Maia is a former challenger to Silva's reign.
"I truly believe I can beat him," Weidman said. "I wouldn't be asking for this fight if I didn't believe it. I don't only believe I can beat him, I believe I can go out there and finish him. It's going to be awesome to beat Anderson Silva."
The UFC has started to pair off middleweights, with Michael Bisping and Brian Stann meeting in September, and Vitor Belfort and Alan Belcher colliding in October. Weidman, however, still does not have a dance partner.
Weidman was even asked if he would face Silva in Brazil, which the Matt Serra-trained fighter responded to by saying, "I think Brazil is cool. I wouldn't shy away from that. For me to get a 'W' over him in Brazil? Imagine that. I'm looking to take the biggest challenge possible."
