Chiefs Can Beat Colts with Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles

Last season the Kansas City Chiefs were not very good. Their final record was 4-12. The offense was offensive (25th in the league) and the defense was even worse (30th).

Towards the end of the season they had some young players make some exciting plays, but that just meant they stunk to a lesser degree.

Fast forward to the start of the 2010 season. The Chiefs have one of the best running backs in the league in their backfield, Thomas Jones, who is ready to show the young guy, Jamaal Charles, how its done. Josh Cribbs returns ready to light up the field. Charlie Weiss is running the offense and Romeo Crennel the defense, the architects behind the New England Patriot Super Bowl teams.

Both are obviously better coordinators than head coaches.

Fans were nervous saying it, but these guys might be good. Four weeks in to the 2010 season and they are the only undefeated team left standing. Staying that way will not be an easy task this week when they take on the Indianapolis Colts.

As usual, the Colts have one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Peyton Manning has the Colts scoring at an incredible pace of 29.2 points a game. Their defense on the other hand is allowing an average of 23 points a game so far (25th in the league).

Five of the 11 touchdowns the Colts defense has given up came via the run. For the Chiefs to win next Sunday they will have to add to that total.

Houston and Jacksonville have proven that the Colts are vulnerable to a strong running game. Conveniently enough, the Chiefs happen to have the third best rushing game in the league with 160.7 yards a game. Thomas Jones has been chiming in an average of 72 yards a game and Jamaal Charles almost 80. With two powerful backs ready to pound the Colts defense the Chiefs may stand an above average chance of forcing Indianapolis to its second straight loss.

Of course that also means that the defense will somehow have to fend of the advances of Peyton Manning. Even without many of his weapons healthy (Pierre Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez, and Donald Brown all missed the game last week) he is still running the third best offense in the league.

For the Chiefs to have a chance the running game will have to help out their 25th ranked passing defense or Manning will have a field day. With Thomas and Charles taking turns they just might be able to do that.
