American Nick Delpopolo Disqualified from 2012 Olympics for Eating Something Baked with Marijuana

Publish date:

American Judo fighter Nick Delpopolo certainly isn’t the first athlete to be banned from the 2012 London Olympics, but he’s definitely the first one to be banned for ingesting something baked with marijuana.

“My positive test was caused by my inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana, before I left for the Olympic Games,” Delpopolo said in a statement.

“I apologize to U.S. Olympic Committee, to my teammates, and to my fans, and I am embarrassed by this mistake. I look forward to representing my country in the future, and will rededicate myself to being the best judo athlete that I can be.”

According to ESPN, Delpopolo, 23, is the first of 10,500 athletes participating in this year’s games to fail an in-competition drug test. The four other athletes who were disqualified for doping had all been caught prior to their competitions.

His failed test apparently occurred on July 30.

Prior to the test results coming out, Delpopolo beat fighters from Hong Kong and Belgium and lost to fighters from South Korea and Mongolia.
