Although most people have Jameis Winston as a lock for first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft despite his off-field problems, some on-field questions still remain unanswered.
NFL Network’s Mike Mayock mentioned that Winston’s 2013 Heisman-winning season was great, but his 2014 campaign wasn’t as great. Mayock is concerned with Winston’s ball security as he threw 18 interceptions last season.
“I keep going back to the point that he throws too many interceptions, and ball security is the most important thing to me for a quarterback. Off the field, do you trust him or not? There’s still some homework to do on that,” Mayock said.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which have the first pick, seem to be sold on Winston number one, but Mayock wouldn’t count out Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.
“If Marcus Mariota is in the same ballpark, if you’re an NFL franchise, then you take Marcus Mariota because you don’t have any issues off the field,” Mayock said. “If there’s a bigger disparity, then it’s a different answer.”
Having the number one pick overall is a blessing, but it also comes with a lot of work and the Bucs have their hands full with this possible franchise-turning decision.
