Now that half of the college football season has come and gone, we’re finally beginning to get a clearer picture as far as who the nation’s top prospects are. Obviously there is still a long ways to go before bowl games, and it goes without saying that a lot can change between now and then, but we’re definitely starting to see some familiar names stand above the rest on a weekly basis at this point.
Before proceeding, it is important note a few things.
First and foremost, players who had a lot of hype surrounding them in the preseason tend to stick around in people minds, even if their performances don’t exactly warrant that sort of respect. (Think David Amerson and Barkevious Mingo.) It is a lot harder to crack the rotation than it is to stay in it – that’s just the nature of the beast.
Also, you will notice that we aren’t giving quarterbacks and running backs much love at the top of the board, but there is a good reason for that. The reason? There are serious questions about all of this year's top quarterbacks, and there is only one running back of note worth discussing.
Finally, we didn’t mark any prospects down too strongly for the stuff that transpired this weekend. Georgia, LSU, Texas and so on and so forth – none of their players were downgraded for one bad Saturday. You just can’t do that when you have this much material on guys already.
As far as the order goes – we ripped off ESPN’s latest power rankings. Certain things will change as the year progresses (namely the Arizona Cardinals’ position), however, for now, it will do.
With all that said, you can check out picks Nos. 1-7 here.
