The Cardinals resolve at quarterback appears to be - much like it’s offensive line - soft as jello. When the season ended both the old, and new regimes, one after the other, threw their support behind Kevin Kolb. Just one week ago they were rumoured to be interested in Alex Smith. The new word out of Arizona is that they are very high on Matt Barkley.
Barkley would be a great pickup for the Cardinals, but not with the seventh overall pick. There is a lot to like about Barkley. He is incredibly intelligent, played in an offense that was borderline pro and he makes excellent reads at the line. He has all the potential to be a great quarterback in this league.
There are some concerns surrounding Barkley though. He doesn’t have great arm strength and is relatively short for a quarterback at 6’2. There is of course his laundry list of injuries as well. His shoulder injury is keeping him from throwing at The Combine and ended his final season with USC.
This wouldn’t be a bad move for the Cards. They just have to get creative to make it work. Maybe they could trade down and get extra picks later in the draft. Barkley certainly has first round talent and were it not for the concerns about his durability he might not be a bad pick in the seven hole. Because of the concerns regarding his injuries though, he will likely slip to the mid or late end of the first round. Be it Barkley or anyone else, it is well overdue the Cardinals draft a quarterback in the early rounds in the draft.
