2012 South Carolina Football News Round-Up: Rico McWilliams and Jadeveon Clowney

South Carolina head coach had two updates on some Gamecocks this morning after the Gamecocks held an early morning practice.

  • Freshman cornerback Rico McWilliams will have ligament repair knee surgery to help with an injury he suffered in Saturday night's practice. McWilliams went down with a knee injury and was down on the ground for several minutes before being helped off the field. McWilliams will miss the 2012 season and will receive a medical redshirt this season.
  • Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will be used in a variety of ways this year as the Gamecocks plan to use him at the defensive end, defensive tackle and middle linebacker positions this upcoming season. Cloweny had a solid freshman year despite not knowing the defensive scheme and is expected to make a much larger contribution to South Carolina this season. His speed and agility in all of these different positions should help him have the best approach at getting to the quarterback.

It's sad news to hear on Rico McWilliams. He was a solid recruit in the 2012 class who had potential as someone to work into the rotation at cornerback/special teams. Alabama made a run at him later in the recruiting process so you know South Carolina got a good player in McWilliams. Hopefully, the surgery will go well for McWilliams and he'll return to full health soon.

The news on Clowney is interesting. We've heard in the past that Clowney could slide inside on certain passing situations to allow him a better chance at rushing the quarterback. The Gamecocks have some talented defensive ends like Chaz Sutton who could step in on the outside when Clowney moves in the middle. It would certainly give the Gamecocks an advantage having all of these talented players on the field at one time.

South Carolina returns to the practice fields Tuesday morning at 8:30.
