Michael Phelps won two medals on Tuesday, pushing his total count to 19 and officially making him the most medaled athlete in Olympics history.
Unfortunately, only one of those two medals was gold – the other was silver.
During the 200-meter butterfly, Phelps came in second to Chad le Clos after he failed to properly touch the wall. What made the defeat all the more painful was that Phelps essentially led the race from start to finish and, if not for that little mistake, undoubtedly would’ve beat out his South African counterpart.
As painful as that might’ve been for Phelps, though, it was twice as painful for his mother. You see, unlike the people who were able to watch this race from home, she had to watch it from her seat in the arena. And from her vantage point, it looked like Phelps had come in first – not second.
