Friday was a very good day for American swimming.

Just before Michael Phelps stole all the headlines by capturing his 21st overall medal and 17th gold in the men’s 100-meter butterfly, a much younger, lesser-known competitor also left her mark on these Games.

Katie Ledecky, 15, won gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:14:63. Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain took silver with a time of 8:18.76, and Rebecca Adlington of Britain took bronze with a time of 8:20.32

Ledecky is the youngest Olympian on America’s 2012 London roster, and the second-youngest Olympic swimming medal winner in U.S. history.
