Where is Great Britain's men's triple jumper, Phillips Idowu?
That’s the question 2012 Olympics officials are frantically working to answer after his agent and personal trainer came out and revealed that they have no idea where their guy is.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Idowu has been off the grid since last week, and some are speculating that his disappearance maybe be the result of a feud he’s having with British athletics officials. How serious of a feud? Serious enough to for him and Great Britain’s track and field coach, Charles van Commenee, to have stopped speaking 18 months ago.
Despite his well-documented beef with Great Britain officials and his notably erratic behavior, though, a lot of people are still finding it odd that he would pull this sort of stunt on the biggest stage of all. He apparently hasn’t even checked into the Athlete's Village yet – something he must do by Sunday.
"There is nothing I can say," Jonathan Marks, Idowu's agent, said to Yahoo! Sports. "My life would be a lot easier if there was."
Idowu’s first competition is set to take place next Tuesday. Do officials expect -- or want -- him back before then? You can probably read between the lines of their quotes on the matter.
"The sport is in a wonderful place," Van Commenee said. "The team has not been as strong as this for a long time. And what do we do? We talk about the invisible man."
British Olympic Association representative, Andy Hunt, offered this brief statement:
"I am perplexed that in the last few weeks before the Games he has turned his back on us.”
Idowu won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Games
