Luke Campbell ensured a perfect start to his Olympic bantamweight campaign with a hard fought win over Italian Jahyn Parrinello.
Campbell, 24, brushed off an edgy opening session, which he fortunate to share 3-3, to register an 8-6 advantage after two rounds.
The points in the bank proved crucial as a second shared round left Campbell an 11-9 winner and secured a place in the quarter-finals.
The Englishman, a world amateur champion in 2011, was amazed by the support he received at the ExCel Arena with Olympic legends Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield also in attendance:
“It’s the biggest event on the planet and my first fight in front of the kind of crowd that would make anyone nervous.”he said.
Campbell is due back in the ring on Sunday.
