Well, that was a doozy. In what many had hailed as the possible preview of the Super Bowl, all I can say is I certainly hope these premonitions come to fruition. It was as exciting a game as any played Sunday, and probably even exceeded the hype thrown upon it. At one point the 49ers were up 31-3, then the Patriots rallied back to make it 31-31. When it was all said and done, the 49ers held on to victory by a score of 41-34 and made a very bold statement in the process. This team is ready to make a run at the super Bowl.
Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers offense got off to a really good start, and they were clearly working the deep ball early. It seemed like the only difficulty the Niners were having on offense was completing a perfectly snapped ball, as the weather made things quite sloppy out there.
In his home coming to Foxboro Randy Moss he caught the 49ers first touchdown on the night on a 24 yard pass into the end zone. He had been given the start at receiver with Mario Manningham still out due to injury, and would only get one more catch on the day. The one receiver who did show up, Michael Crabtree, had another great game tallying 107 yards on the day, and 2 touchdowns; one of which was the game winner. The running backs did their part in the victory, too, combining for 121 yards on the ground. LaMichael James’ workload increased, as he saw time on special teams as well.
The defense was great... for the first three quarters. Up until the 4th they rendered what is widely considered the league’s best offense inept, and had forced four turnovers in the game. 2 of those turnovers were even interceptions, by the infallible Tom Brady. Until late in the 3rd the 49ers had also held the Patriots to 3 points. Donte Whitner was an absolute beast in the backfield, forcing fumbles and launching himself like a torpedo at opposing players.
This is about as bold a statement as the 49ers could make. These kinds of games go a long way in making you a contender. They may not be on the field at the same time but Kaepernick outdueled Tom Brady, and that’s gotta put smile on your face if you’re a Niners fan. Kaepernick had four touchdowns on the day, and he looked great in the process. It doesn’t get any easier next week, though, as the Niners trek to Seattle to play the Seahawks.
