There was some speculation heading into Tuesday night’s showdown between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics that the defending champs would come out rusty. Typically, ring ceremonies and all of the festivities that accompany them take something out of the home team and leave them ripe for an upset on their own floor.
Yeah, the Heat aren’t your standard defending champs. They want more than one title. And they played like a team that wanted more than one title last night – ultimately defeating the Celtics 120-107. Frankly, the score wouldn’t have even been that close if LeBron James hadn’t been forced out with leg cramps for a bit and Leandro Barbosa hadn’t gone insane. Miami’s victory was never in doubt.
Dwyane Wade led the way for the defending champs with 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting. LeBron James racked up 26 points (10-of-16) and 10 rebounds. Chris Bosh pitched in 19 points and 10 rebounds, too. For Boston, Paul Pierce led the way with 23 points and Barbosa added in 16 points off the bench. Rajon Rondo finished with 20 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds in the loss.
