2012 NBA Finals Game 1 Ratings: Thunder vs. Heat Does Record Numbers

Predictably, Game 1 of the 2012 NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat was a ratings monster. Even though this year’s playoffs have been somewhat dull, particularly in comparison to last year's thrill-fest, the hype surrounding a showdown between the NBA’s two best players proved to be enough to earn ABC its highest ever Finals Game 1 ratings.

How many people tuned in to see Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook squash LeBron James and Dwyane Wade? According to Forbes, Tuesday night’s outing generated an 11.8 rating – up 10 percent from last year’s NBA Finals between the Heat and Dallas Mavericks. The ratings peaked between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m. EST, when those numbers spiked to 14.1.

For details on specific markets, we go to Sports Biz Journal’s John Ourand:

For the record, the overnight in Seattle was a 9.1, tying the market with San Diego for 40th place.

So much for the theory that the NBA lockout would hurt ratings.
