2012 MLB Draft: South Carolina Gamecocks Recap

When you win back-to-back national championships, you should expect to see several players drafted to get to the next level.

So far, the Gamecocks have seen plenty of players who have either played with the Gamecocks or have signed to be a part of Gamecock Nation. Here's a quick rundown of where players with South Carolina ties have been drafted so far in this year's MLB draft.

  • Corey Seager - 1st round, Pick 18 overall to the Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Jamie Jarmon - 2nd round, Pick 83 overall to the Texas Rangers
  • Jamie Callahan - 2nd round, Pick 87 overall to the Boston Red Sox
  • Christian Walker - 4th round, Pick 132 overall to the Baltimore Orioles
  • Matt Price - 7th round, Pick 222 overall to the Baltimore Orioles
  • Evan Marzilli - 8th round, Pick 273 overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Michael Roth - 9th round, Pick 297 overall to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
  • Zak Wasilewski - 14th round, Pick 445 overall to the Toronto Blue Jays
  • Kwinton Smith - 14th round, Pick 456 overall to the Texas Rangers

It's a nice mixture of current Gamecocks with future Gamecocks. The interesting name this early in the draft is Kwinton Smith. You may know him as the Gamecock football signee from Dillon who is expected to be a big part of the Gamecocks' future soon enough. Would this be enough to entice him to skip football and head to the Rangers' minor league organization? I guess we'll know soon enough.

It's great to see Christian Walker and Matt Price get drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. Both players will head to the majors as it's hard to envision them improving on their draft stock. Price was actually drafted higher last year as a redshirt sophomore but returned to USC with the hopes of improving his stock as a starter.

Michael Roth is certainly deserving of his high draft pick this year. Last year, Roth was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 31st round of the MLB draft so you know he made the right decision coming back to school. It was assumed he knew he was back all along but look what another solid year has done for this outstanding Gamecock.

South Carolina should expect Evan Marzilli to sign with the Diamondbacks when its all said and done. He's another guy that wouldn't be able to increase his stock tremendously by coming back so signing and getting in the minors now is probably the best option for Marzilli. He certainly adds some speed and solid hitting to a future lineup.

The Gamecocks will miss out on the signees like Corey Seager and Jamie Jarmon. It's hard to imagine either player will enroll at South Carolina after getting drafted so high. Both players were considered big hitters coming out of high school and would probably have a spot in the lineup right away. South Carolina took a chance signing these guys but, since you never know what could happen, you definitely had to give it a shot.

The MLB draft is set to continue on to the later rounds so expect more Gamecocks to come off the board. Names like Adam Matthews, Tyler Webb and Nolan Belcher could all here their name called along with some Gamecock signees.

Congrats to all of these Gamecocks on their draft positions so far and good luck to the rest of the draft-eligible Gamecocks over the next few days!
