As the baseball season winds down, some players are finally turning into the player you thought they could be.
Brandon Belt has carried the tag of a hot-hitting prospect for the Giants for more than a year now, but his inconsistent play has frustrated fantasy owners and kept him out of the line-up. Then he had four hits, including a pair of doubles, on Thursday to show off his potential.
Matt Moore is another player who irritated fantasy owners with a slow start, but two earned runs in six innings with seven strikeouts against the Blue Jays was more of what was expected this season.
Ian Kennedy has been another disappointing pitcher, but 6 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts against the Dodgers gave his owners a late-season lift. Zack Grienke has struggled since his move to the AL, but gave up just two runs in seven innings and struck out seven.
Edwin Jackson has carried the potential of an ace throughout his career and lived up to it at times, including eight scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts against St. Louis.
Jeremy Guthrie continued to be good since his trade to Kansas City, allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings.
It was not such a great night for all pitchers as Jaime Garcia gave up six runs, Jarrod Parker allowed five in five innings, and Justin Masterson allowed eight runs. Jose Quintana had another rough start, allowing five earned runs and so did Jon Lester.
The offensive hero of the day was Jonathan Lucroy, who was 3-for-5 with a grand slam en route to seven RBIs. Rickie Weeks had five hits for the Brewers while Ryan Braun added three, including his 36th home run.
Hunter Pence finally played like the star the Giants thought they were getting as he had two hits and two RBIs. Jimmie Arias is an interesting free-agent find if you need a middle infielder as he had a homer.
Matt Dominguez is another potential pick-up after getting recalled by the Astros this week. He went 3-for-4 with a triple.
Bryce Harper continued his hot-hitting week with two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs.
There's not a lot of great pitching match-ups today with Adam Wainright versus Gio Gonzalez topping the list. For daily fantasy leagues, I like the Pirates in Milwaukee against Mark Rogers. Look for Garrett Jones on your sleeper list.
If you need more advice for those fantasy leagues, check out http://onesitefantasy.blogspot.com/ , which posts its line-up each morning. A word of advice, however, that you want to double-check that the players are actually in the line-up later in the day.
