Coming into this week, everyone knew what the 2012 Belmont Stakes was going to be about. There was only one storyline. There was only one horse to watch.
The Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, was going to be I’ll Have Another’s coronation. A three-year-old thoroughbred that never really captivated the nation in the way that Affirmed had the last time we saw a Triple Crown, was going restore some semblance of notoriety back to horse racing – a notoriety that it hadn’t had in over 30 years.
And then in one quick announcement on the Dan Patrick Show, I’ll Have Another’s trainer, Doug O’Neill, changed all of that. Suddenly the 2012 Belmont Stakes was just another race, featuring just another set of horses that nobody had ever heard of. Sure, some people will still tune in today, but the intrigue isn’t the same. Folks aren’t invested anymore.
The show must go on, though. Shortly after O’Neill dropped a bomb on the sports world, odds makers scrambled to reconfigure the Belmont betting odds. Here is the latest, via Bovada:
Street Life 8/1
Unstoppable U 20/1
Union Rags 3/1
Ravelo’s Boy 30/1
Five Sixteen 30/1
Guyana Star Dweej 30/1
My Adonis 15/1
Belmont coverage will begin today at 1:30 p.m. pacific time, and the actual race is slated for 3:30 p.m.
