An Alabama woman was shocked and outraged to find a note left on her windshield complete with a racial slur.
The unidentified woman said she noticed a note tucked under her windshield wiper in a Walmart parking lot on Thursday, and was shocked when she read what the author had written. “That's not a parking place you stupid n*****!!!” the note read. The woman admitted that she parked illegally at the Walmart but told reporters that her parking was no excuse for such a mean-spirited, racist message.
“I thought this was so disgusting,” she said, adding that she was left shaken up by the incident. The woman said she only went into the store for a few minutes to buy crayons for her granddaughter, and acknowledged that she parked on yellow lines near a handicap spot by the front of the store.
“When I got to the front of my car and got in my car, that's when I realized the note was on the windshield and I got out and said, ‘What the?' I said, ‘What is this?' and I read it and I got really upset,” she said. “I don't think notes like this should exist or that someone should put something like this on someone else's car because it is ridiculous.”
The woman reported the incident to Montgomery Police, and is hoping that surveillance video can help to find out who was behind the disturbing note. “I know that I was in the wrong spot. I realize that, but still, no one had the right to put anything on my vehicle,” she said. “No one should have to go through this. I don't want to cause any problems, but I think actions should come forth.”
The stunned woman said that despite the 50th anniversary of the Selma march to Montgomery and some progress in regard to race relations in her state, incidents like this prove that there is still a long way to go. “After all of the stuff they've had over the past couple of weeks about trying to get us to stick together as one and then I get this on my car. It just started bringing back memories. It really did.”
Walmart released a statement following the incident, stating that they would cooperate with authorities if an investigation is launched.
“We're sorry that our customer was the victim of this despicable behavior. We will assist law enforcement should they choose to investigate this matter further,” the statement read.
