The children of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory reunited on NBC’s Today Show for the first time in 44 years.
Charlie Bucket himself, Peter Ostrum, joined the other children of the iconic film for an interview on the morning show. Strums castmates included Vercua Salt actress Julie Dawn Cole, Violet Beaurgarde actress Denise Nickerson, Mike Teevee actor Paris Themmen and Augustus Gloop actor Michael Bollner.
The children were joined by Rusty Goffe, who portrayed one of the chocolate factory’s head Oompa Loompa.
In the interview, the cast revealed several secrets about the classic adaptation of the Roald Dahl book, including the truth behind the chocolate river.
“It was disgusting,” Goffe said, with Bollner admitting that the river was entirely water and not, in any way, made of chocolate.
The cast also dished on their co-star Gene Wilder, who famously portrayed Willy Wonka in the film.
“Five kids clambering all over you, wanting his attention,” Cole said of howe the kids acted around Wilder.
“There was never any ‘Please don’t follow Mr Wonka’ - and we must have been pretty tiresome.”
Though the cast has gone their separate ways since the film, and most didn’t remain in show business, they still keep in touch.
“We think of ourselves as part of a family,” Themmen said. “Maybe a bit of a dysfunctional family, but a family really.”
