British Student Finds Racist Note On Bananas

A university in England has launched an investigation after racist messages were written on a black college student's bananas.

The University of Warwick, located in central England, is looking into the matter after Faramade Ifaturoti, a 19-year-old biomedical-science student, found bananas in her kitchen with “NI***” and “Monkey” scrawled on them in black marker. Ifaturoti lives with several flatmates, and one of them could be the culprit.

"Just entered the kitchen and look at what one of my flatmates has done. I am extremely disgusted," Iftaturoti wrote on Twitter on April 5, including a photo of the bananas.

Soon after, Ifaturoti tweeted, "I'm actually fuming! Like? What? In 2016? People still behave like this?!"

In addition, one of Ifaturoti's friends claimed that a photo of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was found on the fridge.

In a statement given to Buzzfeed, the university said it is doing its due diligence to find out what happened.

“A senior member of the University’s Residential Life Team is in direct contact with the student concerned and the student has been offered alternative accommodation in a number of other locations on campus while the matter is being investigated,” the university said.

“The head of accommodation is personally investigating this complaint,” the school told Huffington Post UK. “It has been escalated instantly.”

Ifaturoti has been given alternate accommodations while the university conducts its investigation. She told BuzzFeed News that when she saw the note she felt “upset” and “as though I’d been targeted,” but that “this is not the first time something like this has happened.”
