If you want to make something patriotic for your next birthday party, Fourth of July or Memorial Day cookout, here’s a recipe on how to make an American flag cake.
This flag cake starts out easy with boxed cake mix, food coloring, and pre-made frosting (video below).
According to Allrecipes.com, here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 (10.25 ounce) packages white cake mix
- 9 egg whites
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 3 3/4 cups whole milk
- 2 tablespoons clear vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon blue food coloring
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 10 cups fluffy white frosting
- 1 tablespoon white chocolate chips, or as needed
- 2 tablespoons white sugar, or as needed
- 1 4-inch round paper or cardboard stencil
Start with three packages of white cake mix, and mix it up following the directions on the box. After pouring half of the batter into a separate bowl and whisking in the red food coloring, divide the rest of the batter into two bowls and add blue food coloring to one of them. Stir in 1 cup of white chocolate chips for the stars of the flag. Transfer the batter into 8-inch cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Once the cakes have cooled, use a knife to trim the tops and slice the red and white layers in half, creating two thinner layers. Cut a cake round out of the red, white, and blue layers by using the 4-inch stencil.
To assemble the cake, start with a red layer and add some frosting. Then, top with a white layer and frost again. Repeat with the remaining layers, creating the stripes of the flag. Place the blue ring cake on top of the second red layer of cake and frost the inside of the blue ring. Add the 4-inch white cake layer into the blue ring, frost again, and finish it off with the 4-inch red layer on top of the white one. Frost the entire outside of the cake with the rest of the frosting. To create a flag pattern, use a knife to score stripes across the top of the cake. Use red and blue pieces of leftover cake, white chocolate chips, and white sugar for decorating.
