Donald Trump Jr. drew furious backlash from social media users after posting a photo that some felt mocked former President Barack Obama.
Donald Trump Jr. uploaded the photo to his Instagram account on Dec. 17, Time reported. It shows him posing next to Sen. Ted Cruz while holding a giant cookie with a poorly sketched caricature of his father's predecessor.
The president's eldest son is seen making a funny face as he is holding the cookie, while Cruz is seen trying his best to not look uncomfortable in the photo op.
"With friends like these... some good friends decided that while my birthday is not for 2 weeks that they would get me an early 40th birthday cake," Donald Trump Jr. wrote as the caption. "And what birthday is complete without an Obama cake? I figured it was so good that I would have to share it with Ted."
The picture garnered more than 40,000 likes, but many social media users were not happy with the photo. Some accused the president's son of being "classless," while others called the photo op "tasteless."
"Pretty sad when a grown man isn't mature or confident enough to stop doing petty things like this," wrote one user.
"You guys are so irrationally obsessed with Obama. Grow up," wrote another.
"This is so childish and just plain rude. Then again it ain’t nothin new," another user wrote.
The giant brown cookie appears to be influenced by Barack Obama's iconic "Hope" poster, which was designed by artist Shepard Fairey in 2008, according to The Inquisitr.
Trump Jr. was attending a private party at Le Bilboquet restaurant in Dallas when he received the cookie from his friends. Stephan Courseau, the owner of the restaurant, has since issued a statement condemning the photo, CultureMap reported:
Dear Bilboquet Friends, This morning a lot of you have been shocked and appalled to hear that Donald Trump Jr. and Ted Cruz celebrated a birthday of a friend at Le Bilboquet with a cake with our former president Barack Obama's face on it. Let me be clear, I share your indignation without any reservation. Both Donald Trump Jr. and Ted Cruz were attending a birthday celebration of one of our regular patrons who rented out our venue for a private event. The party was not for either one of them nor was it any kind of partisan rally.
Someone that attended the party brought in an outside cake for Donald Trump Jr.’s upcoming birthday and we are not sure who that was. Both Donald Trump Jr. and Ted Cruz took pictures with the cake and posted on social media outlets. We at Le Bilboquet feel betrayed and sad. Restaurant business is about creating a hospitable environment for all, a non-partisan, non-politicized, nondiscriminatory and respectful environment. The fact that guests decided to use our restaurant as a platform to promote, disrespect, and spread hatred goes against everything we stand for.
Our friends and patrons represent a wide spectrum of American beliefs including: Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. What brings them together is the same belief that we can live together with love, respect and tolerance. I made America my home a long time ago because of these values that embody the real American dream.
