A transgender waitress from Minnesota shared a heartwarming story on Facebook about an interaction she had with the parents of a curious little girl, which quickly went viral.
Liv Hnilicka describes the interaction, which she refers to as a "stellar parenting moment," in her post, Cosmopolitan reports.
A man reportedly approached Hnilicka while she was working as a waitress and said: "My daughter just asked if you were a boy or a girl. I didn't want to speak for you so would you like to talk to her?"
Hnilicka agreed and went to talk to the girl.
"I heard you asked if I was a boy or girl," Hnilicka told the the little girl after complimenting her hair hair ribbon. "I think the important thing to remember is that everyone can be anything they want to be in this world. And it's also important to try to be the best selves we can be for our family and friends. And even to strangers.
"So to answer your question, I was told that I was a boy when I was little and now I live my adult life as a girl. It sounds complicated but it's actually pretty simple. Do you have any questions for me?"
The little girl replied with a smile and said, "Nope!"
Hnilicka told Cosmopolitan that she wanted to share the story publicly for a few reasons, one of them being that it was very different than the usual interactions she has with strangers.
She added that her response was not rehearsed, as some people have wondered. However, she said that she has encountered many negative experiences with parents and their children enough negative experiences with parents and their children, and she has often thought about how she would respond if given the opportunity to teach a child.
"Children are really just learning everything, so it's important to use those moments," she added.
Hnilicka is very pleased with the response she has gotten since sharing her story and said it gives her hope for the future.
