Teens Rescue Abandoned Dog From Sewer Drain

Tyler Price and his cousin Eugene were walking through an abandoned lot in Flint, Michigan, when they saw a sign lying on the ground. They picked it up to discover it was covering a storm drain, where a pit bull had been left to die.

“I lifted it up with my foot and looked. All I could see were his eyes,” Tyler told Life With Dogs.

The boys acted quickly. Although they were unable to get the dog out themselves, Tyler called his father, George. “He immediately said, ‘Dad, take my wallet — can you go to the store and get the dog some dog food and water?’” George said.

They called Streethearts, a local animal rescue organization, and lowered food into the drain to the hungry dog. Eventually, Streethearts was able to get the dog out using a rope. “I thought he was gonna be like, angry, or like, try to bite people,” Tyler said.

The dog, which has since been named Mars, is currently in the care of Terissa Kerr, who says she can’t get close to Mars without an affectionate lick.

“I just saw his little face and something called to me,” she said.

“My mind cannot comprehend why someone would want to do something like this — especially to him!  He’s amazing ... Thank God Tyler came along.”

Despite the rescue, Mars still has significant battles ahead of him. He has a severe heartworm infestation and the treatment might kill him. Additionally, Mars weighs half of what he should, according to an online fundraising page set up to fund his treatment. The donation goal has already been met for Mars' treatment.

Tyler has also been affected by the rescue — though he currently doesn’t have a dog, his family is considering adopting one now. “He’s been on me since Sunday about getting a dog, so we’ll get one that’s rescued. He deserves it,” George said.
