Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin's wife Louise Linton is under fire after she posted an Instagram photo that later spurred her to get into a public spat with a commenter.
Linton posted a photo of herself and Mnuchin exiting a government plane during a trip to Kentucky, where Mnuchin talked to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about tax reform and visited Fort Knox, CNN reports.
In the image, Linton is extravagantly dressed in designer labels, including Tom Ford, Valentino, Roland Moulet and Hermes. She paired her all-white outfit with a silk scarf.
"Great #daytrip to #Kentucky," wrote Linton. "#Nicest #people #beautiful #countryside #USA."
She also tagged the designers in her post, TMZ reports.
"#Rolandmouret pants #tomford sunnies #hermesscarf," read Linton's caption, in part.
When some commenters responded angrily to Linton's post, she retaliated with a comment before the post was deleted.
"Glad we could pay for your little getaway," wrote a user, adding the hashtag "#deplorable."
"Cute! Aw!!" began Linton's emoji-laden response. "Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable!"
"Do you think the U.S. government paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?" asked Linton. "Lololol. Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country? I'm pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day 'trip' than you did."
"Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you'd be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours," she continued. "You're adorably out of touch."
"Thanks for the passive aggressive nasty comment," Linton added. "Your kids look very cute. Your life looks cute."
"I know you're mad but deep down you're really nice and so am I," wrote Linton, telling the commenter to "chill out."
The person Linton was addressing in the Instagram comment, mother-of-three Jenni Miller, said she found Linton's post "incredibly offensive."
"She went to a state where one in five people lives in poverty and many children don't know where their next meal is coming from. Instead of helping in some way, she chose to brag about her outlandishly expensive clothes. It's more than tone-deaf, it's deplorable," said Miller.
A spokesperson for the Treasury Department said that the Mnuchins would reimburse the government for Linton's travel expenses.
"The Mnuchins are reimbursing the government for her travel, and she does not receive compensation for products she mentions," the spokesperson said.
Commenters on Facebook slammed Linton for her response.
"Brought to you by the 'let them eat cake' administration," wrote one user. "How's that swamp draining working?"
"Carrying a Birkin bag and talking about tax reforms for the less fortunate," commented another, "that right there is an utterly corrupt mentality."
