Viewers of the 88th Academy Awards were left confused after actress Stacey Dash’s bizarre appearance in the award show (video below).
Host Chris Rock introduced the “Clueless” actress and Fox News contributor as the director of a ‘minority outreach program.’
“I cannot wait to help my people out,” Dash said to the confused audience, reports NBC News. “Happy Black History Month!”
Dash made headlines earlier this year for calling for an end to Black History Month. The outspoken Republican also spoke out about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, calling it “ludicrous.”
While most of the crowd was confused, two celebrities’ reactions showed showed that they not only understood the joke, but felt fairly uncomfortable about it.
Singer The Weeknd and model Chrissy Teigen were caught on camera cringing in response to Dash’s appearance.
According to Daily Mail, Dash published a blog post about her appearance, saying, “When they added ME to increase the diversity, I'm sure many black people rolled their eyes. I'm not 'black enough,' they say. But guess what? I've heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks — and votes — just like all my friends.”
It appears that just about everybody, including Dash herself, was confused by the joke’s purpose.
