Plane Passenger's Rude Act Goes Viral (Photos)

A Boston Globe columnist's photo of a woman hanging her ponytail over an airplane seat went viral.

Dante Ramos shared the photo on Twitter, which showed the woman in question with her ponytail hung over the back of her seat, blocking the view of the passenger behind her.

"Congrats to the ponytailed young woman in seat 22B," Ramos wrote. "You've invented a whole new way to be awful at 35,000 feet."

Ramos told Metro he was flying from Houston to Boston when a ponytail suddenly flopped down on the screen in front of his partner, Ryan.

"Up to that point, the person in 22B hadn’t attracted my attention at all," he said.

"Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I’ll assume she didn’t [realize] that her, er, readjustment would affect anyone else. At first I thought, 'What *is* that?' It took us a few moments to figure out that it was another passenger’s hair."

Ramos said he and Ryan "marveled at the ridiculousness" of the situation for a few moments before he took the photo. He told the site that it appeared the woman was playing a game on her phone, not realizing what she'd done when he approached her to make her aware of the situation.

"Her first language did not appear to be English, and she may have thought he was complaining that she’d reclined her seat," he said. "Without really looking up from her device, she brought her seatback forward, and the ponytail disappeared."

"I tweeted the photo when we landed in Boston, because I thought the situation was hilarious."

Some of Dante's followers on Twitter advised him to mess with the woman's hair as a way to get back at her for her rude behavior, with some saying he should have cut the hair off and others telling him to place a piece of chewing gum in it.

Ramos said he was "surprised" the tweet got the attention it did, and that he wishes he could get the same amount of attention on his "columns about housing policy, transportation or higher education."
