Professor Sydney Engelberg's Reaction To Student's Crying Infant Goes Viral (Photo)

A professor in Israel is making the rounds on the Internet after one of his students photographed him holding a baby during class.

Dr. Sydney Engelberg, 67, an organizational behavior professor at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University, took the crying baby in his arms and continued teaching when his mom, one of Engelberg's students, stood up to leave with the infant.

The photo was posted on Facebook by Engelberg’s daughter, Sarit Fishbaine. She told BuzzFeed that her father, a South African native who has taught for 45 years, teaches for the master’s degree program at the university, so he often has older students in his class.

“There’s a lot of young moms and a lot of them have babies, and he encourages them to just bring their babies to class,” Fishbaine said.

The photo of Engelberg, a father of four with five grandchildren, soothing the baby has gone viral, racking up more than 1 million views on Imgur and over 5,000 shares on Facebook.

"He’s gotten love letters," his wife, Fredi Siskind Engelberg, told Yahoo Parenting. "He’s pretty blasé about it, and we just find it all very funny. I think it must have happened on a no-news day.”

Fishbaine said her dad doesn’t quite understand why the photo has impacted people so much, because it’s “so natural for him.”

She added: “The way he sees the concept of getting education is not only learning the dry facts that you need to learn in class, but also learning values. And that’s the very important message that my dad wants to endow to the world.”
