Poignant Photo Shows Hearing-Impaired 10-Year-Old Thanking Veterans At National Cemetery (Photos)

A photo showing a 10-year-old boy with a hearing impairment thanking veterans buried at a Florida National Cemetery went viral.

The emotional picture, taken by Barbie Groome of Wesley Chapel, Florida, shows her son, Darren, in front of the final resting place of his great grandparents and great uncle, who were military veterans.

Darren is seen in the photo facing the graves at the cemetery in Bushnell, Flordia, giving the sign language symbol for “I love you.”

“He was shocked to see all the burials there and so many of them,” Groome said. The mother said she brought her son to the cemetery following the shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which killed five military servicemen.

“He didn't understand the concept of those horrible situations going on,” she said. “It was a good timing for him at that age to understand complete (sic).”

The boy’s great grandfather was in the Marine Corps and received a Purple Heart, while his great uncle was in the Army. Both served in World War II.

“He was in awe,” Groome said. “And learned about who served and fight for our freedom."
