Baby Found In Car With 'Incoherent' Adults

A 2-month-old Miami, Florida, girl was found at the scene of a car wreck along with two "incoherent adults," police said.

The baby girl was found inside of a car along with her mother and a male driver. Officers found them after responding to the scene of what was described as a “minor accident.” Both adults were reportedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, authorities said.

Miami Police Lt. Freddie Cruz said the baby’s mother was outside of the car when authorities arrived at the scene of the crash around noon. The baby was outside of the car but still strapped in a seat, WTVJ reported. The man in the driver’s seat was unconscious.

No injuries were discovered, and the adults were transported to the hospital in stable condition. The baby was brought to a fire station, where the father later appeared and declined to speak to the media. The baby’s godfather was also at the station, and told WTVJ that the child’s name is Elizabeth Ashantay.

Though it was initially reported that the girl was put in the custody of her biological father, police later clarified that she was in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families. A dependency hearing was scheduled soon after.

The incident came after a similar situation in Ohio, in which police posted photos to Facebook of a couple overdosing on drugs in their car while a 4-year-old child was in the backseat.

“We feel we need to be a voice for the children caught up in this horrible mess,” the Facebook post read, BuzzFeed reported. “This child can’t speak for himself but we are hopeful his story can convince another user to think twice about injecting this poison while having a child in their custody.”

No charges were initially filed, but the adults could face charges if it is confirmed that they were under the influence at the time.
