A mother was outraged after searching Party City's website for a Halloween costume for her 3-year-old daughter, and her open letter to the company has gone viral.
As Lin Kramer searched the toddler section of Party City's website, she was shocked to see only three occupation-themed options for girls -- compared to 16 for boys.
There was a police officer costume for each; the difference between the one for boys and the one for girls particularly upset Kramer. She centered her open letter around what she called the "sexy cop" costume Party City sells for little girls.
Kramer took to Facebook to write to the company on Sept. 14, saying, in part:
While Halloween costumes are undoubtedly about "make-believe," it is unfathomable that toddler girls and boys who might be interested in dressing up as police officers are seeking to imagine themselves in the incongruent way your business apparently imagines them. Toddler girls are not imagining and hoping that they will grow up to become a 'sexy cop' --- which is clearly what your girl costume suggests; rather, young girls, just as young boys, see and admire their family members and neighbors offering service to their communities and delight in the idea of doing the same. I am absolutely appalled that your business reinterprets girls' innocent and well-intentioned dreams into this costume.
Kramer went on to suggest the company include options from the boys' section in the girls' section as well. "And in so doing, you would not only improve the message you are sending to society, but you might actually help your bottom line by selling more costumes," she wrote.
Party City responded to Kramer's Facebook post then deleted the comment, reports Fox LA.
"Hi Lin, thank you for reaching out to us," the company wrote. "We appreciate the insight and will consider your feedback for the future. Thank you."
