Outrage Over Old Navy Ad With Interracial Family

The clothing company Old Navy caused unexpected outrage on Twitter when it tweeted an ad featuring an interracial family - white man, black woman, black child - on April 29.

The ad included the caption: "Oh, happy day! Our #ThankYouEvent is finally here. Take 30% off your entire purchase." notes that some of the negative reactions included:

"Old Navy supports the GENOCIDE of the White race! It takes a White mother and a White father to make a White baby."

"@OldNavy Absolutely disgusting. What's next? Gender neutral bathrooms? Pedophilia acceptance propaganda?! Never shopping here again."

However, supporters of the ad campaign and interracial marriage tweeted back with the hashtag #LoveWins, which was used in 2015 when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage:

"Hey @OldNavy, my family and I thank you for the diversity in this ad! #LoveWins, no matter the color."

"@OldNavy thank u 4 this ad.I shared a pic of my bro(who serves his country overseas)and his beautiful family."

Clay Pollioni, the white male model in the ad, wrote on Instagram: "I'm extremely proud to have taken part in a campaign that not only celebrates our nation's diversity, but also unites families with multicultural backgrounds and promotes love of all kinds! #LoveWins Thank you @oldnavy."

Grace Mahary, the black female model in the ad, wrote on her Instagram page: "I am proud to be representing interracial love, multiculturalism, and most importantly, a mentality that supports opportunity for all ethnicities. Thanks @oldnavy #lovewins #hatefreezone."

The son of Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona chipped in to support the ad as well, CNN notes.

Jack McCain, who is married to Renee Swift McCain, a black woman, tweeted: "To the people upset about the #OldNavy 'Scandal' of an a picture of a mixed race marriage, eat it."

Jack also tweeted a picture from his wedding and wrote: "I hope this one burns too, you ignorant racists. Here is us on our wedding day."

Renee tweeted: "I was just in @OldNavy this weekend! Bought something for me and my husband. #LoveWins."

"The shift in the American family landscape is historic, and interracial families are only one part of the new normal," Julie Michaelson, head of global sales at parenting website BabyCenter, told CBS News.

"We're seeing more households with parents who are single, co-habitating, LGBTQ, or which include stay-at-home dads. Some brands are nervous about embracing this new reality, concerned about backlash."
