Veteran actor Michael Keaton was apparently expecting, like the rest of the world, that he would win the Academy Award for Best Actor, as a now a viral Vine clip shows Keaton putting his acceptance speech back in his pocket after “The Theory of Everything” star Eddie Redmayne was announced as winner.
In the moment caught on camera, Keaton, who delivered a powerful performance in “Birdman” that caused many to believe he’d win the coveted award, quickly puts a piece of paper back into his jacket pocket. This paper or note card is believed to have been his acceptance speech, and although Keaton seems to have taken the loss like a pro, it’s a heartbreaking moment.
Despite his loss to Redmayne, 33, the 63-year-old veteran actor stood on stage as “Birdman” accepted the award for Best Picture, and with a push from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, spoke to the crowd as the ceremony ended.
“This has been a tremendous experience,” Keaton said as the cast and crew of “Birdman” accepted the Best Picture award. “These guys are as bold as bold could be, it was just a tremendous honor for me — look, it's great to be here who am I kidding, this is just great fun, thank you very much.”
