Michelle Obama Addresses Famous Side-Eye Meme (Photo)

Former First Lady Michelle Obama came out recently to clarify a meme-sourced rumor based on a snapshot taken of her and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The image shows her in the midst of a facial gesture that may be interpreted as a "side-eye" to Clinton, who was standing right next to her, but not exactly looking at Mrs. Obama.

According to LifeStyle, a "side-eye" facial gesture is "a sidelong glance expressing disapproval or contempt." Mrs. Obama's side-eye, when she and Clinton were subject to additional scrutiny due to an inauguration that marked the official wrapping-up of a long and controversial political election period wherein the two ladies represented the "losing" Democratic party, was caught and framed in a meme.

The caption attached to the meme, where one former first lady says, "Girl" and the other responds with, "Girl I know girl," has captured the imagination of the meme-sphere.

Mrs. Obama has lately come out to clarify what she was feeling on the day, which was controversial in the mind of many Americans and to many people outside of the country who closely watched the election.

"I didn't want to have tears in my eyes because people would swear I was crying because of the new president," she said in reference to the meme at a convention for the American Institute of Architects in Florida.

She also seized the opportunity to address the hopes and aspirations of many liberals in the country, who believe she might make a good president one day.

But she immediately dispelled the rumor.

"I wouldn't ask my children to do this again because, when you run for higher office, it's not just you, it's your whole family ... Plus, there's so much more we can do outside of the office, because we won't have the burden of political baggage."

In January, several memes popped up on the internet to help the public "cope," as Mashable called it, with the result of the November elections which had poised two candidates who would break historical precedent for the country.

Mashable wrote: "Though Michelle Obama has kept it cool and professional throughout Friday’s inauguration ceremonies, the internet’s pretty sure she’s actually screaming internally."

As liberals and progressives alike -- and even some conservatives -- continue to try to comprehend the repercussions of the election, memes like Mrs. Obama's "side-eye" will continue to emerge on social media.
