Man Ticketed For Warming Up His Car In Own Driveway (Video)

Taylor Trupiano recently received a $128 ticket in Roseville, Michigan, for warming up his car in his driveway (video below).

"I thought it was some kind of joke at first, and then I was just thrown back by it," Trupiano told WXYZ. "I was really surprised."

Trupiano was cited for allowing his car to run while he was inside his home -- a common occurrence in chilly Michigan this time of year.

"I was in and out in probably about 7-8 minutes," Trupiano recalled. "So in that amount of time he ran up here, gave me a ticket and, by the time I got out he was nowhere to be seen."

Trupiano posted his ticket on Facebook, where the citation went viral.

"We have five to ten cars stolen this way every winter," Roseville Police Chief James Berlin told the news station. "It's dangerous, and of course it drives everyone's insurance rates up. It drives our crime rate up."

No such state law exists in Michigan.

"It's common sense," Berlin added. "We can't warn everybody of the law there is. Common sense says you don't leave your car running unattended."

Several people commented on the police Facebook page about the ticket:

  • that's fine but when people have 4 cars and DO get them off the street please don't issue tickets for blocking the sidewalk like you did a few years ago especially when you issue them at 2 am when the only people most likely walking around are people casing your house and cars looking to steal. Really don't care if they have to walk in the street. They will get over it.
  • Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. That is a lesson I taught my 5 year old. Issuing a ticket for warming your car up is stupid and wrong. Then lying about it being State Law (according to the MSP) and telling the kid to "drop dead"? Real professionalism there. And you wonder why there is a huge divide between some Police Departments and the Public THEY serve...
