Sometimes literally sugar-coating news is a good way to break it.
Mark Herman, a newscast director at KOLD-TV in Tucson, Arizona, resigned from his job by printing his letter of resignation on a cake, The Huffington Post reported.
“I knew they’d be disappointed in my departure,” he said. “So I decided that I should resign via cake — not only because nobody can be mad or sad at a cake, but also because I’m a bit of a joker and a cake of resignation is pretty damn hilarious.”
Herman’s boss was apparently delighted with the letter. “She laughed and said, ‘No way! You crack me up!’” Herman said.
“She took it over to the 2 o’clock news meeting and made the announcement to everyone,” he added. "We all had a good laugh, and it was a great way to start a Friday. The cake definitely made the bad news a little bit more palatable."
The sweet resignation letter was printed on a white cake with strawberry filling.
People on Reddit, where Herman reportedly posted a photo of the cake, appreciated the gesture.
“You did great work at the company, but this tasteful resignation letter is really the icing on the cake,” Reddit user JustPlainSimpleGarak wrote.
Another Reddit user, CaptainPatent, quipped, “Don't try and sugar coat it... Mark will be missed.”
Herman is leaving his current position to take up the role of automation director at WKRN-TV in Nashville, Tennessee.
