A father's April 21 confrontation with a Target manager protesting their bathroom policy designed to be more inclusive of transgender people has gone viral.
Izzy Avraham began the post, which has been shared more than 71,000 times and liked by 131,000 people, sharing a conversation about transgendered people he had with his daughter, Tizrah.
“I asked her what she thought of that. She said, "That's weird." And was quiet for a bit. Then she said, "If a man walked into the women's washroom I'd fight him until he got out!"’
Izzy responded by explaining to his daughter that she should be kind and loving to all, even if you disagree with their behavior.
The conversation continued while shopping at Target. Izzy decided to involve the store’s manager in their discussion.
“I asked her on a practical level how Target's policy worked out if my six-year-old daughter walked into the women's restroom and someone with a biologically male body walked in behind her,” he said.
“She said Target has always had a policy of non-discrimination, and that if parents had concerns we could use the family rooms, or Tirzah could come in the men's washroom with me,” he added.
The manager's response upset Izzy, who responded by saying he was uncomfortable with Target’s decision to allow men in women’s restrooms. He added he felt “no longer accepted, respected, and welcome in their stores.”
Many responded angrily, accusing the man of teaching his daughter intolerance.
“This is my little girl,” wrote user Crystal Goebel, on an uploaded photo of her daughter. “She’s transgender. What you are telling me is that she is somehow a threat to your child? And that she isn't in any danger using the men's restroom simply because she has a penis? My innocent 5 year old deserves LESS rights because YOU think she's "weird"?”
Yet some parents agreed with the man.
“For me personally it doesn't have to do with being transgender. It has to do with the fact there are crazy people in this world. if my little girl walked into the restroom and a grown man who is not transgender wanted to follow her in the restroom it is not ok,” Christina Reveles said.
Indeed, already 200,000 people have signed a separate petition to boycott Target over their new bathroom policy, YoungConservatives reports.
