Katy Perry outraged some when she compared her "old black hair" to former President Barack Obama.
An Instagram user, using the handle “MsBarackObamaAsWell," remarked they missed Perry's old black hair when Perry, 32, made the controversial comment, Vibe reports.
Perry recently cut off her longer hair, which is naturally black, trading it for a cropped blond style.
A laughing Perry responded live on Instagram, "Oh, really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, okay. Times change. Bye! See you guys later. I should leave now."
In the background, somebody can be heard saying, "you're cut off" before the video ends, leaving some disgusted, Mashable reports.
"Not Katy Perry pretending to be a woke activist then making an insensitive joke comparing her hair to Obama," tweeted one person about the pop singer, who had previously showed support for causes like Black Lives Matter, reports CNN.
"People are not reaching with this Katy Perry /Obama "joke", it wasn't outwardly racist but it was a microaggression with racial undertones," added another Twitter user.
"Wow Katy Perry," quipped a third. "The reference to former Pres. Obama was offensive & a poor, tasteless attempt at humor. Your privilege is showing."
Others defended Perry, saying her joke was misunderstood.
"Y'all don't even know why y'all mad over this video, it was just a poorly executed joke that she didn't think about before saying," wrote one Twitter user.
"Katy Perry meant she wants Obama back and can't have him same way ppl want her black hair and won't get it back ... Christ ppl lol," tweeted a second.
"How is what she said racist?" wondered another on Vibe's post. " I take it as barack obama is the past just like her black hair is the past. donald trump is current just like her dumb blonde hair... why are people jumping so fast to claim racism? am i missing something? people just seem to try so damn hard to be offended these days."
Others pointed out Perry's past activism and support for Obama, who is fond of the pop singer.
"We have just one of my favorite people performing tonight -- Katy Perry," Obama said in late 2016 as part of a reception for the Special Olympics, People magazine reports. "We are so grateful to her."
"I love Katy Perry," he later added. "She is just a wonderful person. I just met her mom, now I know why she’s such a wonderful person."
It's not the first time Perry has been accused of being racially insensitive.
Earlier in April, Perry's Instagram post with an image of the Hindu goddess Kali also sparked outrage.
"Current mood," reads the caption to the traditional Hindu representation of the goddess, upsetting many Indians who found it disrespectful to Hinduism.
