Every day, the case surrounding Jussie Smollett’s hate crime hoax keeps getting stranger and stranger. Not only was it determined that Smollett’s family used the services of Michelle Obama’s former aide, it was also seen that they encourage the State Attorney’s assistant in Chicago to try to get the crime removed from Chicago PD to the FBI. However, out of all the twists and turns, in the case, the one that explains why Smollett confused his attackers for white men might be the most bizarre.
During an interview with TODAY, Smollett’s attorney Tina Glandian came up with a reason that Jussie Smollett confused the black attackers for white men – she said they could have been wearing “white face.”
As Abel and Ola Osundairo attacked him on the frigid streets of Chicago early in the morning of January 29, Smollett claimed it was a race-related attack based on the fact that he was a relatively famous actor.
When the two brothers were arrested, Smollett said he “found it hard to believe” that his attackers had been black, despite being on the phone with them a few minutes before, he thought he saw one had “pale or white skin.”
Glandian has affirmed that Smollett did not lie about his state of surprise at learning his hate crime attackers were black. Instead, she explained that it was possible because the brothers might have been in “disguise” as white people.
“He did tell police that from what he saw, he thought it was white or pale skin, that’s what he initially said. Obviously, you can disguise that. You can put make-up on,” she said.
It was not hard for Glandian to find evidence of this. She found a 2016 YouTube video of brother Abel Osundairo, where he was seen wearing white makeup as he performed a Joker monologue. She used this as proof that the brother had before putting on white makeup to disguise his face.
“There’s a video, it took me all of five minutes when I was looking into the brothers, to of one of the brothers in whiteface doing the Joker monologue,” she said.
Glandian is a favorite attorney for shamed celebrities. She’s worked with Chris Brown and Kesha as well as Smollett. She has a “theory” about why the brothers would have attacked Smollett, but made it clear to the TODAY audience that it was solely her “speculation.”
Although Smollett was calling the brothers early in the morning on the day of his attack, she explains that it was not to orchestrate the hoax but to plan nutrition and personal training session. The lawyer claimed that while on the phone, Abel urged Smollett to venture out into the frigid weather for food.
“When you say it’s undisputed, we’ve actually, there’s been more info leaked than we have actually received from the prosecution in this case which is a little absurd. When you say we know, we believe that, but a lot of the information that the CPD has put out there has turned out not to be evidence, so we do have to question it,” she said.
