The 2015 Academy Awards came and went Sunday night with the usual fanfare. The evening’s big winners gave an assortment of memorable speeches, but few were as heartfelt and genuine as the one J.K. Simmons offered after clinching the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ Oscar for his performance in "Whiplash."
Simmons started out by thanking his wife and his children – which is fairly standard. However, he then followed that up with one simple request for the kids at home: “Call your mom, call your dad. If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive on this planet, call them.”
The audience began to clap, thinking that was it. But Simmons wasn’t done.
“Don’t text, don’t email,” he said loudly over the clapping. “Call them on the phone! Tell them you love them and thank them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you!”
And then he closed his speech out by saying, “Thank you Mom and Dad.”
