A would-be burglar was caught and wrapped in duct tape by a homeowner and some neighbors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 18 (video below).
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, Mark Thompson was filmed by the homeowner's security cameras breaking into the home, casually walking around, watching TV and drinking a beer, reports KRQE.
The homeowner received an alert that someone was walking around his house, and was able to watch the burglar on his cell phone and call his neighbor, Shandra Vestal.
Vestal recalled how she and her husband loaded their guns and went over to the house:
I went to our garage, my husband and I, and we got two pistols. We met [the homeowner, Micah] in the cul-de-sac. He blocked off the entry of the cul-de-sac to make sure that if he did have a vehicle, the man that was entering the home, he wouldn’t be able to escape. As he pulled in, I passed him this .45 and then I got the other Ruger.
Micah and I went into the home with two of the loaded weapons. Micah announced himself to the perpetrator saying, "I have a loaded weapon, get down on your hands and knees." At that time, I came up behind him, and we got the individual on his hands and knees [and then] to lay down. We got his arms and his feet duct taped. Then we picked him up, carried him out to the front yard and waited for the police to show up.
The police found Thompson taped up in the driveway.
The perpetrator had previously broken into another home, Vestal stated. "He was wearing the same clothes that he had stolen from that home when he broke into Micah’s house."
Vestal recalled that Thompson tried to explain the situation to police: "He truly said, 'I’m not trying to steal anything, I just want to be friends.'"
LawNewz.com notes that jail records show Thompson was still being held without bond on June 20 in the local detention center.
KRQE viewers weighed in on the news station's Facebook page:
That is the best story I have heard in a loooong time. That is what neighbors are for. They are my favorite kind.
This guy broke into somebody else's home 6 weeks ago, and was held at gunpoint by the homeowner. How does the DA drop the case on insufficient evidence? WTF?!
He's lucky! If it was my house, he'd be dead!! I would have shot him!
What sucks is that he'll be out same night breaking into more home's.... Our JUDGES need more backbones!
